Oregon State pulled off a shocker in Corvallis on Thursday night. Coming into the game as underdogs by more than 3 TD's, the Beavers played tough all night, holding off a late charge by the Trojans as a Greg Laybourn interception off of Mark Sanchez with less than 3 minutes to go essentially sealed it for the Beavers.
Ronaldinho's debut against Bologna in San Siro. He was the man of the match, but it was not enough for Milan as they lost 2-1. Great skills, passes, a few shots, and the assist that led to Milan's goal.

Formally ending an Olympics that was as much mystery as majesty, the host nation unfolded its arms, threw back its head, and howled.

There were silly flying drummers, a human tambourine composed of thousands of shimmying women, and chugging unicyclists rolling giant glowing circles.

There were guns shooting confetti into the stands, gymnasts bouncing on stilts, and Power Ranger look-alikes soaring up and down on ropes just for the heck of it.

In the closing ceremony Sunday, after two weeks of an Olympics that was run as sternly as the thousands of soldiers who guarded it, the Chinese finally let that guard down.

They allowed athletes to break human barriers and run around the National Stadium screaming and waving what appeared to be bottles of booze.

They allowed David Beckham to kick a soccer ball into a crowd.

And, oh my, they even allowed Jackie Chan to sing.

"Through these Games, the world learned more about China, and China learned more about the world," said Jacques Rogge, International Olympic Committee president, in his closing address.

Those giant booms that filled the National Stadium throughout the night were not only fireworks, but Rogge's sighs of relief.

The New York Times: ''A Cuban tae kwon do athlete and his coach were barred for life after the athlete kicked a referee in the face following his disqualification in his bronze medal match.

The Cuban coach, Leudis González, offered no apology for the actions of the athlete, Ángel Matos, during the men's over-80 kilogram (176 pounds) match.

Matos was winning, 3-2, in the second round, when he fell to the mat after being hit by his opponent, Kazakhstan's Arman Chilmanov. He remained there, awaiting medical attention, when he was disqualified for taking too much injury time. Fighters get one minute, and Matos was disqualified when his time ran out.

Matos angrily questioned the call, pushed a judge, then pushed and kicked the referee, Chakir Chelbat of Sweden. Matos then spat on the floor and was escorted out.

"He was too strict," González said, referring to the decision to disqualify Matos. Afterward, he charged that the match was fixed, accusing the Kazakhs of offering him money.

"This is a strong violation of the spirit of tae kwon do and the Olympic Games," the World Taekwondo Federation said in a release. It added that there would be a lifetime ban of González and Matos in all championships sanctioned by the organization and that all Matos's records at the Beijing Games would be erased.

In his first match, Matos defeated Italy's Leonardo Basile, then beat China's Liu Xiaobo, 2-1, in the quarterfinals. In the summer of 2006, while the football world's attention was focused on Germany, thousands of players around the globe were training hard and competing to be part of the World Cup...The Homeless World Cup. It began in 2001 as a wild idea by a Scot and an Austrian—to give homeless people a chance to change their lives through an international street soccer competition. Five years later, the annual Homeless World Cup had become an internationally recognized sports competition. 500 homeless players from 48 nations would ultimately be selected to represent their country in Cape Town, South Africa—coming from such disparate parts of the world as war torn Afghanistan, the slums of Kenya, the drug rehab clinics of Dublin, Ireland, the streets of Charlotte, North Carolina, the overflowing public shelters of Madrid, Spain, and the unforgiving city of St. Petersburg, Russia, where the homeless have no rights or identity. Win or lose, for these players it would be the journey of a lifetime. The film follows seven players in their own tough worlds as they confront the daily challenges of life on the streets, battle drug and alcohol addiction, and fight for the right to be recognized as human beings. We witness their struggles, hopes, and determination. The teams are greeted by the South African President, as they make their spirited entrance in to two newly built street soccer pitches, located at the precise spot where Nelson Mandela was released from prison—with the glorious Table Mountain as the backdrop. Nobel Peace Laureate Desmond Tutu joins the players, declaring homelessness the new apartheid. For 7 days of fiercely competitive matches, the teams vie for the championship cups. Despite the fact that they may not have a home, the players wear the colors of their country with pride. From shattering misconceptions about the homeless to seeing people living at the edge of society discover that they also can be winners, the film shows in a real and powerful way that sports can and does change lives. As the Russian coach observes, To me, football is the best model for real life. There is no last game in football and there is no last game in real life. You always have another chance to win.
